T.L Mitchell a native of Viriginia has always enjoyed a variety of movies and books on vampires and werewolves over her years. Her favorite author Stephen King. Although she does enjoy a good thriller, she enjoys a good romance. Her love for writing and a true romantic at heart led her to write her first novel which began the Dark of kNight series.
Dark of kNight, her debut paranormal shapeshifter romance novel made its first release August 8, 2009 on the bookstore shelves of Waldenbooks.
Many people have ask me the age old question, "How did you come up with the story of Dark of kNight?"
Dark of kNight began with a series of dreams beginning back in 2004. I was having the same dream over and over again. Finally it wasn't until I started writing the dreams down and decided it would make a pretty good book.
The first draft was titled "Beast Within" the story still centering around Julie Knight and the love of her life Daniel Maxwell. The story was finished October 2008. In my honest opinion, I was not satisfied with the story and waited until Febuary 2009 to re-write the entire book. By the beginning of March 2009, I had finished a 105,000 novel, which you now have come to know as Dark of kNight.
Dark of kNight went live May 22, 2009 by AuthorHouse Publishing.
A little background on the Fort Mountain, GA. This is really a funny story. I needed a setting for the book. I wanted something in Georgia, so I picked up a map and searched for a heavily wooded area for my wolves to run free. Spring Place was the perfect spot. The story was already finished and ready to go to the publishers. It wasn't until I began to do a little more research on Spring Place, that Fort Mountain came up. This is where I discovered there was a mystery behind the 855ft long wall. No one knew who really built the wall. As I read through the legends, it occured to me- This is perfect for my vampires! And so began the rewrite to include the vampires and the legend that ties into the Lycans.
The seperation between Lycans and werewolves, came easily. I wanted shapeshifters for the Lycans, and leave the werewolves as the evil creatures who terrorize the humans.
The love story between Daniel and Julie, began with the third dream. The love between the two was so strong it left me amazed when I finally woke up. The dream lingered with me until I began to add it to my notes.
Julie and Daniel are wolf shapeshifters, they are bound to one law and bonded to one another in a way normal humans could not understand. Their bond is so strong they become spiritually, emotionally and physically attached to one another. A love like no other.
The story developed as Julie soon discovered she was a Lycan, a wolf-shape shifter. It is a story of self discovery and the greatest of all ...first love.
The publishing facts. Yes, I submitted query letters to agents and publishers. I think 15 all together. One bite from an agent, who in return turned the manuscript down after a three month wait. One agent accepted it, and I turned them down. I was not thrilled with the idea they were going to charge me to edit my manuscript. Even though, I know it did need a little "pro" polishing.
The one publisher I really wanted to take the manuscript, I never heard a word. Without anymore delays, I finally went to AuthorHouse Publishing. A self publishing company. No more than two weeks into process of publishing the book, I finally heard back from the publisher I wanted. They were interested. My heart was broken, when I had to tell them I had already published the book. Since the book was self published they could not take it over. Little did I realize at that time what it meant to them or me. Now, I fully understand. There are certain things one must realize about copyrights and printing when choosing to go self published.
Self publishing has its benefits and draw backs. The web is filled with all sorts of bad no-no's for going self published. After nearly having an axiety attack over everything I have read, I realized one clear thing. It is not nearly as bad as they made it out to be. Yes, most self published books don't make it to the bookstore shelves. I was told about 10% of my publishers books make it to the bookstores. It takes alot of work and a mind set to stay focused no matter what. If you have a dream ...make it happen.
On October 13, 2009 Dark of kNight went under contract with Wild Horse Press. An exciting new venture for the Dark of kNight Series. Dark of kNight is now no longer a self published work, but published under the skill and expertise of a professional publisher.
With the new venture, Dark of kNight was re-edited and re-published, making its first debut in ebook November 2009. By December 09, Dark of kNight was back in swing with its new cover and in paperback form.
On October 15, 2009, Fall of kNight was accepted and the contract was made with Wild Horse Press.
